Reverse Engineering
Yell4CAD
can provide simple reverse engineering or organize a
third party to carry out a complex 3D scanning service.
Reverse engineering is an everyday process used in virtually every industry.
It is the ability to take existing or modified products/forms and replicate
them. Many products/forms exist that have no formal documentation or data
associated with them. All too often products are designed and drafted and then
the tooling is modified without the drawings or CAD model being updated.
Several years down the line tooling wears, employees move on, and no data exists
showing the product's changes. To enable replication of these items, accurate
dimensional data needs to be obtained. A simple process of taking measurements
is engaged or, in more complex situations, the function of a 3D digitizing system
can be utilised. In my experience this technology is now an invaluable part of
the design/production process.
3D digitisers and scanners collect accurate measurements with the subsequent
data then being transferred into a CAD system. Finally a 3D digital replica
model is produced.
3D scanners capture data from many products/forms e.g. sculptures, organic shapes,
buildings, tooling, aeroplanes, cars, models, people, fossils etc.
An example of reverse engineering an existing product would be the styling of a
body kit on a car with clay, scanning the clay forms and then importing the scan
data into a CAD system and producing a mould for manufacture.
